Just about everyone knows that chocolate can be deadly for dogs, but did you know grapes can be too? Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure! Not to mention our beloved bacon — the excess fat can lead to a very serious illness called pancreatitis. Recently a surprising new offender joined the ranks of potentially deadly delicacies: peanut butter!
While old-fashioned peanut butter is safe for our pets, a few types of specialty peanut butter have now started including XYLITOL instead of sugar. While safe for people, xylitol is highly toxic and can kill pets! Here are the peanut butters containing xylitol that we are aware of, but you should start checking the labels of all of them just to be sure: (1) Go Nuts, Co., (2) Hank’s Protein Plus Peanut Butter, (3) Krush Nutrition, (4) Nuts ‘N More, and (5) P28. See this link for more information on xylitol, peanut butter, and dogs.
Now is also a great time to brush up on other foods and such that could be dangerous for your furry friends. See the picture below for a great summary. There is now also a great app that you can have on your phone for quick reference in regards to toxins for our pets! Click the following links to either download the ASCPA Poison Control app, or go to the Pet Poison Helpline.
